Bandwidth won't be a problem on any half-decent cable connection with low latency, and you aren't pushing heaps of other traffic through it while trying to use VoIP (unless you can set up QoS on your router)

All of the commercial VoIP systems have rather modest bandwidth requirements.

You will have to be careful about encryption if you do that, because the law still says that's a no-no on the ham bands. Youl would have to force your machines to use clear passwords on SMB/CIFS shares, and stuff like that.

I've heard of the odd LTR system on the ham bands.

A three-channel ASTRO25 system on 2m would be fuckin' cool!

Speaking of APCO25, I asked a Icom vendor why D-star instead of APCO25. He said all APCO25 radios have to pay a royalty to Motorola, but a Motorola guy said that is false. APCO25 is a standard (the moto guy asked, "did a M/A-COM guy say that?"). I also heard APCO25 not only specifys digit...

New open digital PMR standard

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. From http://www.diis.org/ The ETSI DIIS Ad Hoc Group has been suspended. At the last ERM meeting in Sophia Antipolis, the DIIS work item was cancelled. A new work item was generated to form a new Ad-Hoc group with the task of developing a low cost, low ...

Too bad I can't find any UHF Range 1 XTS5K's on eBay :(

Will a Range 1 XTS-5000 go up to 477MHz?

I assume you'll be looking at second hand gear. For portable operation, get an ASTRO Saber or XTS-3000. For mobile, get an original ASTRO Spectra (I personally like the W3 model, with the control mic).

Make sure you check the flashcode first to make sure it does indeed do IMBE before you buy it.

Motorola AstroSabers are more money for P25 and you should get a programming set up for these as they are not programmable except by the radio service software. You may find a AS for under $500 but you have to know what you are buying. kv5e And Shaun's newbie guide to ASTRO portable radios is the d...
