Well hey, some people make it their life mission to lecture people that "baud" and "bps" aren't the same thing ;) Until Motorola starts calling it 9600bps instead of 9600baud, that's what I'll call it too. Some people say pounds and inches are the same too, but it doesn't make t...

Well it's probably safe enough at the QTH, the license is 83W EIRP for base stations and 41W EIRP for mobiles (50W and 25W carrier power through a dipole, respectively.)

Hey, how hard is it to get a 45W ASTRO Spectra to do 25W without blasting spurious shit everywhere, overheating etc? I want a W4 or similar, but the license is only good for 25W.

FWIW, CPS will let you set the channel width, even if a channel is P25 only, but in practice the radio will ignore that setting when dealing with P25 signals.

Sorry, yes, you're correct. I originally only asked about AMBE, but I thought I asked about both. It was a fair while ago, so I had to check my emails to be sure.

They do have this board though... http://www.dvsinc.com/products/VC-55.htm ... though I imagine it's at least a few hundred bucks.

The vocoder isn't a problem, you can buy a DSP preloaded with IMBE from DVSI for about $20 a pop. Drop it on a board with a serial codec and you're laughing.

I'd rather see P25 Phase II use OFDM rather than the current FM nonsense. You could get 30kbps without much trouble, high spectrum efficiency, and it'd be as robust as hell.

You said nothing about 1200bps data.

P25 does GPS locations with transmissions, albeit at a slower rate, using the same arbitrary data field as Motorola soft ID.

The feds are also very interested in the IVD aspect (integrated voice and data)... imagine doing building assessments following a tornado, and every transmission coming back having latitude and longitude right along with the voice? Makes all the mapping a whole lot easier. P25 does that with bells ...
