i have some experience with these radios.

i have had several of them.

all of them have operated just fine right out of the box except one - that had a totally deaf RF board. this board was swapped by the seller with minimal delay.

things to realize:

- you get what you get. upgrades are not gonna happen on 5000's.

- 123ABC s/n = no warranty support from M

- SOME of these require the ALPHA XTS 5000 software to read/write. best ask that question before you buy.

- MOST of these radios are DSP / HOST 2.20.xx - pretty old in xts 5000 speak - they are currently shipping host 5.00.03/04

- DISPLAY models from these guys do NOT support analog DTMF in any fashion due to their old HOST.

now, the good part. $320/$370 (his price fluctuates) for a model 1 5000 with a secure board is an absolute "BEST BUY". you can't touch the secure module new for less than that, much less the entire radio. the display models @ $650ish are a little overpriced for my taste - but again, you can't even buy a secure board for the 5000 for $650 - so again, not all that shabby.

operationally, they work great. they all have IMBE / conventional flashcodes in them and the display models function fine.

While I realize it is not possible to upgrade any of the radio features, what about secure boards? Will these radios support different/more advanced (AES) encryption boards?

The trouble is, unless you're batdude (grumble... bar code reader), you can't keyload an AES crypto board easily. KVL3000 with the AES flash is required to do this... no grabbing a (relatively) cheap T3011DX and being able to load your radio.

I dare say that DES-OFB is probably good enough for the vast majority of comms out there...

i am sure that the AES UCM is tied to a HOST revision.

i will tell you that to my knowledge, host 2.20 does support AES

Too bad I can't find any UHF Range 1 XTS5K's on eBay :(

Will a Range 1 XTS-5000 go up to 477MHz?
