Appco P25 Demo'd

Post by BlakJak »

Hey guys

At an AREC training day recently one of the guys (Regional Manager for Wellington region AREC who also runs his own RF Specialist outfit) demo'd the P25 technology that New Zealand Police are soon to be deploying.

Pretty neat stuff. Radios with IPs... never thought i'd see the day... :P SMS to the handset, things like that. Interesting to note the lag in the Audio - but also interesting to hear described exactly how they get other 'stuff' down the channel simultaneously. Looks like the GPS Handset is gonna become pretty standard too...

Interesting and good that they support local.

I have worked with tait radios and trunked systems and they are pretty good.
One either loves the product or you hate it .

That side of the world has avast amount of radio manufacturers.

Tait is quite big here and especially amoungst the mines , and utility companies. etc

Here is the link for the tender anouncement.

Yeah, Tait are pretty well regarded here.

Was very sad to note the passing of Sir Angus Tait, ZL3NL, recently:

but as for the APCO 25 stuff, it is of particular interest to me as the New Zealand Fire Service use the same radio network (managed by NZ Police), and i'm a volly.... not only that but through AREC we have some involvement with Search and Rescue, Police being the controlling/lead agency for SAR in NZ...

Hmm, I would've thought that TETRA would win out over P25 in that part of the world.

Is the system up on Radioreference yet? Give us some specs and we can steer you in the right direction for monitoring, if you're so inclined.
And the sign says you got to have a membership card to get inside.

I don't have any digital equipment, so I wont be in a hurry to rx it.

By the same token it'll be a little while before Fire are on it which is my primary concern...

Meanwhile i'm just keeping my ear to the ground on it. if/when I can afford to get some gear capable of receiving it I may look again.

(Primarily I listen while mobile, enroute or in attendance at callouts...)

Nah. Tait is their local radio company (gotta support local business after all), and P25 is already the winner on our side of the Tasman because of TETRA's piss poor low powered equipment.
