IC-706MKll

Post by Wardriver »

Ok, So am I the only one with intermod problems on VHF?

HF works great 100 watt with a sm-8 mic sound like God.

But them dam birdies on VHF..............

HF I give it a 9

VHF/UHF I'd say strong 8

Unit gets warm!! after a good 1/2 hour rag chew

Overall.............8.5

All the locals that have one of these seem to have that problem - pagers, traffic lights, etc.

That is about the only bad thing I have heard about these rigs.

And you are correct about them getting HOT! As long as you let it sit for a bit after the rag chew it will not pose a problem. I use mine for a 6m FM net weekly and I am the NCS so I talk a LOT. At the end of the net you cannot hardly put your hand on top of it.

VHF/UHF Fm is a pain in the ass for sure, but SSB it is pretty clean...Want to make sure it is not your radio and just environmental noise? Take the 706 out to the country FAR away from town and fire it up by battery...If you still have ALL of the birdies you referred to it may be internal to the rig.

I think FM was an after-thought. The problem is in the squelch circuitry. It has no hysteresis. It acts like an RF squelch control, like you'd expect on HF. Majorly annoying mobile like you point out.

No doubt! You can also hear the CTCSS tones loud and clear. Scanning is all-or-nothing too. You can lock out channels but can't choose VHF only or UHF only like you can with dual-band FM rigs.

Other than that, I love the radio. I work DX from my car and it kicks ass.
