IMHO, that mic sucks. I have one. It's so sealed up, you sound like you're talking underwater while using it.

I have 2 of the VX-170's and they are great. I also highly recommend the waterproof speaker mic over the regular speaker mic. Well worth the extra money spent in my opinion.

A good friend of mine just switched from a Kenwood KH2ATR2D2 or whatever that model is to a VX-170. He has a VX-177 already and that VX-170 is a logical choice for 2m capabilities.

I personally like the mic. It and the radio went to the bottom of a 10ft. pool, the radio needed drying out, but the mic still worked fine, I opened it up and no water inside whatsoever. I think, as seen in pictures, it is the same mic the rescue divers for the USCG use.

I know mine doesn't have that orange stripe on the right side. It does say SUBMERSIBLE on the front though.

I'm going to order mine tonight I think. I was thinking about getting a MH-57A4B speaker mic to go with it. Does anyone have any experience with that mic?

Yeah, my spouse has the regular mic and I have the waterproof one. The waterproof one feels and sounds 10 times better than that tiny regular speaker mic. The regular mic has a higher pitched "tinny" type sound to it on both TX and RX which I don't really care for.

Okay, yeah, I was afraid that it would have that tinny sound. A buddy of mine has the waterproof one and the audio on that is good enough for me.

I lost mine too. I went to wally world, and they have samsonite adhesive backed belt clips/retainers. Take the adhisive off the LARGE one, and unscrew the screw out of the original, put it in the aftermarket, and there ya go. It has worked fine for me for 4 mos now.

Mine was in the electronics, near all the cell phone holders. I also experimented and found that the small one will work also, but I prefer to use the larger one.

I too like my VX-170. And they also have a UHF version, the VX-177, which I also have. Basically the same as the VX-170 except it receives 420 to 470 MHz, and transmits 430 to 450MHz (USA version), and of course all the accessories for the VX170 will work wth the 177 as well.

If you guys want legal part 80 & 90, the standard horizon 270/370 are avaiable. They use the same chassis, and have 40channels added to the marine stuff. 137-174 coverage, the 270 just does freqs, while the 370 adds 12 space alphatags as well as ctcss & dcs.
They come with the Nimh pack, AA case, drop in charger, and 12v cord.
I know they are not as anal about software as /\/\, as I've "heard" of dealers just e-mailing it out
I've not dealt with this dealer, just an example of the pricing you can usually find on the 370....

I just picked mine up this past Thursday (5 days ago) and so far I like the VX-170 alot. The speaker sounds nice and loud and it appears to be pretty rugged. The buttons are small, but they aren't too tiny like some of these other rigs out there. I can't say I've done much transmitting with it, but I haven't had any complaints yet about my audio. It has far more features then I'll ever need. For someone looking for a basic 2M rig, I'd reccomend this. I needed this thing for our trip to Ireland in the fall.
Oh, this is a VX-120 but someone decided to test the submersible features:

Damned things won't autodial # for some reason
Thats the only thing I don't like about them...other then the fact I lost the speaker/mic cover...(anyone have an extra?)
Other then that its a nice radio as far as a ham radios go...only ham thing i've owned that even comes close to Motorola tough..
