Interesting AS2 on ebay...

Post by richard »

Take a look at this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTOROLA-ASTRO-SABE ... dZViewItem

If you look at the pic that shows the back of the radio, you can clearly see a crown and some sort of circle logo underneath.

That's the Queen's crown, obviously... which leads me to think this belonged to a Provincial or Federal agency.

OPP? RCMP?

That was produced for the U.K. Market.

Yeah, kind of..

I suspect its from the Hong Kong mail service. As we know, that seller is Panter88 from Hong Kong - HK was part of British Empire and was a British colony until about 1999-2000 or so. Plus the DXI-XL algo kinda supports they were for export (either UK or HK - who knows!)

Cheers,
Matt

Now that makes sense. Some sort of HK gov't agency pre-China absorption.

I never even noticed Panter was selling it.

It's an ex-Hong Kong police radio, but it was made for the UK market. probably sent to Hong Kong at some point for use in the police services.
I'v owned a few , and all were purchesed off Ebay U.K. from guys in the U.K.

FYI, if anyone wants to buy off Ebay UK, your US Ebay account info is valid there. Just make sure the seller will ship to the U.S. Lot fo those neat exotic UK Moto radios out there...

Gimme some examples!

"Motorola" is too broad of a search term, and I really am not too familiar with the model names!

GP360
MX3000 (Like Saber, except some neat 5-tone format signalling.)
MX3010 (Like Systems Saber except ,again some odd signalling.)
HT800 (I'm sure you know that one, like MT100)
GM350
GM380
GM900

I'm too lazy to go looking it up (see I admit it) but do those need the model specific RSS, or will they program up with the US flavor RSS of the corresponding model?

Depends on the radio. If one knows what they are doing with a registry then they can get most of the Euro Pro series stuff to read and write with the domestic CPS. As for the MT6000, it's basicly a MTS2000 and can be flashed to be such. The MX3010 an MX3000 require their own dos based RSS but the MX3000 can be overwritten as a Saber by simply creating a codeplug in Saber RSS that corresponds with the radio's configuration and write it in and bam it's a saber. As for the MX3010, that's a little tricky, the VHF MX3010 can be overwritten with a Systems Saber codeplug but the UHF 3010 may or may not work if overwritten. Some of the Euro UHF trinking systems work with a low side transmit like 403-17 Mhz and a High side receive like 460-465 Mhz so the radio might not function as a conventional 440-470 radio.

Of course , it always helps to have the correct RSS which has never been a problem for me.
