HAM-COM 2009 - June 12 & 13 - Plano, TX

Post by n0xmz »

HAM-COM is now 2 months away. Who's coming?

I'll be doing my "Buying & Selling Ham Radio Equipment on eBay" on Saturday. Who knows, maybe someone will show up. If anyone has a projector I can borrow to plug into my laptop, I'd be forever grateful.

I'm going to try and get that Friday off this year so I don't miss all the good stuff in the flea market (if there is any).

Don't forget the Hamsexy dinner! Location & freqs. TBD right here.

I'll be there. Who knows, I might even get some of the Hamsexy business cards printed up that we discussed last year. :baby:

If any of my friends come, we'll be on 462.575, 69.3 PL, NAC 293, with an as-yet undetermined DES-XL key. Or if we have enough P25-capable VHF radios to go around by then, we'll be on Batlabs Green (151.88, 143 DPL, NAC 293, TBA DES-XL key)
And the sign says you got to have a membership card to get inside.

I'll be there. Shouldn't be hard to find me in the usual spot.

For dinner - Bone Daddy's was good to us last time - shall we plan on a repeat appearance or try something different?

No ham radio this time? What's the reg. Hamsexy freq. we use, 145.495 pl 67? We also need to agree on a repeater. I nominate Jon's 443.325 pl 123.0.

I'm all for giving repeat business to establishments that tolerate.. er, take care of us. :baby:

I'll be monitoring the "usual suspect" frequencies regardless.

One week away! Will I be calling to make dinner arrangements again? :mjban:

Oh, also, I might only be there for the first half of the day and with a couple of local goons in tow, but I will definitely be around for dinner. 19:30 Saturday sound good?

I'm working days now, so won't make Hamcom but should be able to make dinner like last year.

>1900 works best for me as I can't escape 0rk until after that.

I suppose the usual Bone Daddys with everyone meeting up on NT5NT 443.525+ 110.9?

Will watch the thread for something different.

Yup sounds good.

For clarification -- my club's repeater is 443.325 110.9 PL

I think Scott listed the wrong PL and Brent listed the wrong freq.

No more spooty coax connector problems, I hope? Also, extra emphasis added.

The Houston GMRS guys that always camp out under the water tower are bringing a 70 cm. on-site temp repeater. When I get the freq/tone I'll post it here.

Funny story about that water tower. Couple months back the city was repainting it and one day the contractors left the guy wires for the tarp unsecured. (The long wires that go from the top of the tank to the ground). Later that night we had a cold front blow in and the dangling wires caught wind and touched nearby HV lines off and on for about 30mins. It was a spectacular light show complete with sparks flying from all sides of the tank, high in the air. Calls from drivers on the highway and side streets flooded 911. They couldn't see what was happening on the ground, they just saw a huge water tank "repeatedly struck by lightning".

Finger memory == great loss.

My club (DCARA) is the one that has the 443.525+ machine, using 118.8. Good repeater but little use unfortunately.

The NT5NT 443.325+ PL 110.9 repeater is still nice and sensitive. Just barely have to touch the PTT on the MT2000 and it opens right up like it did before and after the owned connector got replaced. From inside my domicile, a good 15-20 miles away no less.

The on-site temp repeater will be on either 442.65 (123.0) or 441.525 (100.0). I'll be hanging out on Batlabs Green in the clear and on BW1.

Nothing's been affected by the weather? I hear tell you guys got hit pretty hard the last couple of nights.

Yah, nasty storms last night and lots of rain today but no damage here except for a flipped BBQ grill. Most of the damage was limited to downed trees, power poles, and fences.

Just got back from partially setting up at the Plano Center. I'm sharing my tables with 3 other hams, including tvsjr, so it will be quite a hodgepodge. :ham:

Thought I had tornado #2 of the year, and the chaser of a 70 mph blast of wind out of the squall was pretty intense. Way too much rain too.
I did learn that the Whelen Vortexes do in fact make enough noise to be heard in such conditions.

Haven't seen it blow or rain like that since the hurricanes of my youth in Florida.

Hope you guys have a good time at Hamcom while I am slaving :baby: I would much rather be there than here tomorrow.

Good deal on the table VX, sounds like it'll be a bit cramped. You should have lots of eyeballs from this way if the local chatter pans out.

Do we have a definitive word on dinner tomorrow night yet?

I was planning on making the call tomorrow morning and getting us a table for 7:30 in the PM. So far I have:

-me +2
-you
-Jonathan (VX)
-Scott (n0xmz)

I'm sure mam1081 and his crew will be making their usual surprise visit, but having not heard from them yet I'll leave the list as it is.

Day 1 done - not too bad. Actually, a larger turnout for a Friday than I remember in years past.

BIG Props to Scott, his presentation was a huge hit. All 50 chairs were occupied and at least 8 people standing when I was there.

See y'all tomorrow.

Thanks, Jon. I was rather shocked by the turnout. Most all of them stuck around too.

Lots of good stuff to be had. Got 100' of Wireman "Super 8" coax (similar to LMR-400), a package of silver-plated PL-259s, and I actually found some mini-UHF connectors (finally!), some QSO logging software, and a TV for $1!

Yep, same old, same old... I almost got one of the "123abc" serial numbered XTS-2500's from Panter88 in Hong Kong but the funds were needed elsewhere.

BTW, I anyone wants to park on the west side of the convention center (VX already can 'cause he is a vendor) near the outdoor flea market area, I have been drafted to collect the parking fees between 8A and 10A Saturday. :cheeseandwhine:

Save $8 by giving me a shout on 146.550.
Tell the security wacker :vestman: that you are selling in the tailgate flea market.

Ah Rick to the Rescue! I'll take you up on that offer as I have some more items that need to sit out on the tailgate. I'll be there at 0730-ish.

Josh, rreavis from Batlabs will be joining us so +1 to the dinner headcount.

Thanks to Rick and Jon for the nachos!

A good time as always.

By the way, Rick, if you need a mini UHF female, I've got some spares for 58 and 8x.

Tomorrow, I build a ground plane for a new 900 omni antenna. If that doesn't get me into the TI machine from inside the apartment, I'll be building a yagi. Right now the only machines I can reach from indoors are Denton and Flower Mound.

Ooh, spiff, I didn't have some of those repeaters.

My host family acquired DSL since the last time I was up so that is where I am posting from now.. no pics up yet 'cause I left the camera cable at the house. They will be up tonight if I get in at a reasonable hour or if not then definitely tomorrow.

I did pretty good too.. scored my ton of 1/2'' Heliax that I was looking for plus a VHF-Hi Yagi, another cheap STX, and an iDen data radio and a brand spankin' new 9C1 Wimp (that was not acquired at the hamfest.) :baby:

fake edit: Oh yeah, and the hamsexiest thing seen/heard all weekend? Trying to talk on the temp on-site repeater and getting channel-hogged by a group from Rockwall who claimed that their repeater was coordinated (note: 441.525 is a no-coordinate backyard pair in TX) and that we were interfering with a Boy Scout badge-earning exercise/net/something (which I never heard.)

I saw a grumpy looking, shirt-less Timmay a few minutes after the Chief gave him the ultimatum to remove the shirt or be hauled off. It was the first time I've ever seen him that he wasn't talking.

And about 10 minutes later he was sporting a new Skywarn shirt. (that he probably traded for)

I got some additional info from other Timmy haters who aren't on the tavern. Send me PM if you want to know more.

You were standing right next to us when we were talking about it! :baby: Long and short of it is dude who wasn't a VFD member was wearing a VFD shirt and got lambasted by the chief of said department.

Seriously though, WTF is it with Dallas and vocal, highly-visible wackers? We just don't have that problem down here.

Nah, MO, you just have the suicidal tow truck whackers. Pretty much have to be to work your kind of traffic though.

Saw on the Tavern this morning that apparently Timmay has gone to a lawyer to get his "stolen" shirt back from the Lucas fire chief.

Um, good luck with that.

All I hope is that when that :xls: self Darwinates he doesn't take anyone else with him, cuz he will either end up in  or six feet under.

Nuff Said
